*Gumboot Dancing
A HOZA! Hallmark: Stomp the Yard!

South African Gumboot Dance originates from the gold mines in Johannesburg; it has influenced contemporary dance forms such as stepping and hip hop. In this extremely popular program, participants learn the steps while they explore the origins of the dance. Gumboot Dancing is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity.

*Djembe Drumming:
A HOZA! Hallmark: Equality, Unity, Energy Abound in the Drum Circle

Over 1000 students have already benefited from this truly magical group experience! Each participant has their own Djembe Drum on which to explore the ancient, world wide, art of sound and rhythm. An African History Month Favorite!

*Dirty Drumming:
When Last Did You Have So Much Fun with Trash?
New! And Outrageously fun! Participants use trash and other found objects to devise “stomp like” rhythms as they receive drumming and dance instruction. Dirty Drumming is highly active, intensely student driven and richly rewarding!

*PULSE
A Course in Rhythm
PULSE is an extensive program, unique to HOZA! that explores rhythm through integrated work in Djembe drumming, movement and dance.

*Physical Theatre
A moving expression!
Let your imagination thrill you! Paint a picture, explore an idea or express a thought….physically. Enjoy the process of developing your own dance work; applying elements of dance choreography and learning new contemporary dance vocabulary.

Science and Technology
The Impact is Human:
Now that it’s your turn…how will you save our earth?
You face a challenge! Through storytelling you are led by a trained performer to explore our human impact on the natural environment. Your task:
· Work your way through a series of improvisational and forum theatre activities
· Grapple with moral dilemmas
· Explore concepts of greed, power, want and need, community, peace and wealth
· Determine…how you will save our earth!

Life Skills

*Your Image:
How Are You Portrayed – From Family to Facebook?
· How do you portray yourself?
· How do you see yourself and how do others see you?
· What hopes and fears, notions and beliefs lie beneath the mask of your self image?
Your Image provides a safe, honest, and uplifting artistic process, for students to explore their self image (as it relates to self-esteem) and the way they choose to portray themselves to various others. Activities include role-play

*Anger Management:
Finding Positive Ways to Express Your Anger
Anger is a natural and normal emotion, how we use anger is what is important. Together students learn how to acknowledge their anger and find positive ways to deal with it.
Curriculum Links: The Arts: Drama Benefits: Life skills, A developing a sense of self control, inner calm and self-confidence.

Songs, Stories and Role Play:
Learn as you Sing and as you Play
With performer Kevin Fell, his oil-tin guitar, and all of your imagination, we will learn together as you sing, dance and role play. Please choose form one of the following curriculum units:

Creative Movement:
Express Your Self in Dance
Move–as only you do–on an imaginative journey that explores patterns in movement, sensory contrast and tempo. Creative Movement is a dynamic and non-threatening program that will help students develop their sense of physical, emotional and spatial awareness.
Teachers! This program will introduce you to simple and effective exercises that have helped others to deliver their dance curriculum.
